Product Description

PERCobol is a fully ANSI 1985 X3.23b compliant COBOL compiler which generates Java source code. The resulting Java source code can then be compiled using any JDK 1.1+ compliant Java compiler and will run on any JDK 1.1+ implementation of the Java Virtual Machine as either an applet or application (applets being subject to Java applet security restrictions).

PERCobol includes SYNKRONIX proprietary Java runtime libraries in class file format that allow the COBOL applets and applications to execute on the Java Virtual Machine. PERCobolä runtimes include support for COBOL file types (sequential, relative, indexed) accessible locally and across the network. The runtimes are approximately 250K compiled and compressed allowing for quick downloads across congested networks.

New COBOL Language Features

PERCobol contains features that allow COBOL programmer's access to features that in many cases were previous available only in "modern" programming languages. Some of these features include:

    • COBOL Language Syntax Extensions

    EXEC-SQL
    Provides for embedded SQL to access databases using Java JDBC drivers and eliminates the need for a SQL pre-compiler. Also used for stored procedures in databases where Java is applicable.

    EXEC-HTML
    Allows programmers to write server COBOL CGI server and Java Servlet programs to generate dynamic HTML pages.

    EXEC-JAVA
    Allows any Java feature to be integrated within a COBOL program.

    Advantage

    PERCobol is currently the only solution which allows COBOL to execute directly on the Network Computer (NC) or within a browser itself and thus directly on the Internet/Intranet Client.
