Network Protocols

TCP/IP family of protocols: predominant on Internet.

IP - provides addressing at the network level

UDP - unacknowledged datagram

TCP - connection oriented, acknowledged

the use of UDP or TCP defines connection characteristics

Representative protocols operating at higher levels:

SMTP - electronic mail

NNTP - network news

HTTP - hypertext transfer

Also important:

management protocols (ICMP, IGMP)

router protocols

many others
