General Multi-site Capabilities and Limitations

• Synchronous Transaction Processing

  • The user always uses the actual data
  • Only one instance of the data record exists
  • A two-phase commit assures that either both of the record changes are executed
  • Logical Table Linking
    • Characteristics
      • Data models need to be the same
        • Not possible to link certain rows or columns of a table
      • Users share the whole table
      • Be aware of the expected size of the table
        • Performance is affected by the size of the table and the number of companies involved
        • Deleting actions can take a very long time
        • Queries are more time consuming
      • Be aware of the number of users
        • Records might be locked within updating sessions if two users are trying to access the same record
      • Linked tables need not be on the same physical location. The B-shell will direct the data to the right database
      • Linking over a WAN is discouraged
      • Modules or tables may be linked
